I’m very happy to have had the opportunity to discuss my logo design process after winning the logo design competition held by the erstwhile Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing, now known as the Department of Design and Manufacturing, at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. While preparing for this session, I reflected on my own journey in logo design, which began during my time as an M. Des. student in the department back in 2008.
I shared the (virtual) stage with Dr. Nithya Venkataraman, Reshma Tonse and my friend and senior, Vishal Hemanth. Here are the slides from my presentation.

If I’m asked to design a logo, say for a sports event, I search for the term “sports logo” on the following websites.

Goodnotes iPad app works really well with Apple pencil for digital doodling. Earlier I was using ‘Paper by WeTransfer’ iPad app and then switched to Goodnotes for its good features. This slide features doodles of Kaapi logo and YFoK logo.

If you have enough time, create a logo animation video showing the concept to the client. I use Microsoft PowerPoint to create these types of simple animation videos. The royalty free music is from Pixabay.

Adobe Color is a good source to search for finding color palettes by submitting a keyword. The above screenshot shows the results of searching the keyword ‘sustainability.’
Existing logos are a good reference for color combinations that work well. When I think about blue-green color combination, the Standard Chartered logo comes to my mind! If it is yellow and black, we have the Caterpillar or CBA logo.
I use the pen tool and shape layers in Adobe Photoshop for creating the vector logo. Adobe Illustrator is the standard tool, but I’m more comfortable with Photoshop!
Using the ‘Export’ menu of Adobe Photoshop, logo files are saved as transparent PNG, raster JPEG on white background and vector SVG formats.
Brand guideline EPS templates are available at Freepik.com. These can be edited using Adobe Illustrator and the final version is exported as PDF. The client can use this vector PDF as a source for different versions of the logo.

Boring design is focusing on the things that aren’t seen or immediately appreciated, but can have an equal or even greater impact as “the cool stuff.” Boring design, in reality, is just design. It’s just not the flashy kind. It might not be the kind that earns you standing ovations or followers online. But to me, it is as equally important as everything else. It’s a matter of pride.
