I’m very happy to have had the opportunity to discuss my logo design process after winning the logo design competition held by the erstwhile Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing, now known as the Department of Design and Manufacturing, at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. While preparing for this session, I reflected on my own journey in logo design, which began during my time as an M. Des. student in the department back in 2008.

I shared the (virtual) stage with Dr. Nithya Venkataraman, Reshma Tonse and my friend and senior, Vishal Hemanth. Here are the slides from my presentation.

I started out by designing logos for myself, my wife and kids.

I started designing logos for friends and competed in logo contests with good results.

This slide features Sree logo, CyberPark logo, BRLPS Jeeva logo and DM logo.

Designing logo for non-profits gave me popularity. Slowly clients started coming in.

Secondary Research

If I’m asked to design a logo, say for a sports event, I search for the term “sports logo” on the following websites.

  • Google image search
  • Logopond.com
  • Freepik.com
  • Brand New
  • LogoAI.com

This will give me a good starting point during the doodling phase.

Maximum of three logo ideas are synthesized.

FigJam from Figma is a good online tool for collaboration and synthesis.

The Abstract idea in a gaseous state, is turning into a tangible liquid state through doodles!

Goodnotes iPad app works really well with Apple pencil for digital doodling. Earlier I was using ‘Paper by WeTransfer’ iPad app and then switched to Goodnotes for its good features. This slide features doodles of Kaapi logo and YFoK logo.

Doodles, considered to be in a liquid state, turn into solid state as raster logos.

Jeeva Logo Animation

If you have enough time, create a logo animation video showing the concept to the client. I use Microsoft PowerPoint to create these types of simple animation videos. The royalty free music is from Pixabay.

Logo Animation videos really help in selling the logo concept.

Visit my DESIGNpuli YouTube channel for more logo animation videos!

If more than one logo is submitted, show a slide that compares all of them for the client.
When the client selects one option, explore colors and layout for that logo.

Adobe Color is a good source to search for finding color palettes by submitting a keyword. The above screenshot shows the results of searching the keyword ‘sustainability.’

Sometimes you can pick the logo color from the product itself!
You can also refer color combinations from popular brand logos.

Existing logos are a good reference for color combinations that work well. When I think about blue-green color combination, the Standard Chartered logo comes to my mind! If it is yellow and black, we have the Caterpillar or CBA logo.

The final stage is to create the vector version of the logo.

I use the pen tool and shape layers in Adobe Photoshop for creating the vector logo. Adobe Illustrator is the standard tool, but I’m more comfortable with Photoshop!

Brand guideline documentation is created in Adobe Illustrator.

Using the ‘Export’ menu of Adobe Photoshop, logo files are saved as transparent PNG, raster JPEG on white background and vector SVG formats.

Brand guideline EPS templates are available at Freepik.com. These can be edited using Adobe Illustrator and the final version is exported as PDF. The client can use this vector PDF as a source for different versions of the logo.

My logo design references

Resources shared by the designer David Airey are very informative for logo designers.

My design business references

Content published by Chris Do on ‘The Futur’ YouTube channel is very helpful for designers in attracting new clients and expand their business. As I mentioned earlier, The futur YouTube series on ‘Building a Brand’ is a must-watch!

My presentation references

Big Spaceship agency is now rebranded as SPCSHP. Big Spaceship’s presentations are good references for creative people.

Designers convert boring things to less boring things!

Boring design is focusing on the things that aren’t seen or immediately appreciated, but can have an equal or even greater impact as “the cool stuff.” Boring design, in reality, is just design. It’s just not the flashy kind. It might not be the kind that earns you standing ovations or followers online. But to me, it is as equally important as everything else. It’s a matter of pride.
