Vayali Bamboo Music — as the name suggests — creates music composed of the resonating sound derived from bamboo. They are supported by Vayali Folklore Group. I got an opportunity to design a logo for this unique music team.
My initial doodles were mostly centered around ‘bamboo.’ I also tried a few variations of the alphabet ‘V’ that stands for ‘Vayali.’ Then I stumbled onto the idea of using the Malayalam letter ‘വ’ (‘Va’) of ‘വയലി’ — ‘Vayali.’
Two quarter notes (♩) are incorporated in a bullet shape and together, they formed the Malayalam letter ‘വ’ (‘Va’). One option had a few bamboo leaves, but they were dropped for a simpler logo.
Sreejesh of Vayali digitized the logo based on the doodle. The slanting of the Malayalam letter ‘വ’ is made slightly to the right because of the influence from italics/cursive type calligraphy of roman script.
The font used for the logotype is Franklin Gothic. The logo is now used in branding collaterals, on stage and on the band members’ uniform.
